THEY came on foot to Lake Macquarie, and by boat, horse-drawn carriages, steam trams, trains, automobiles and by air as the region's 200-year European history evolved.
The story of transport at the lake is just one of the tales in Lake Macquarie: Life and Times, a special 48-page magazine on the history of the lake that is free in tomorrow's Herald. The magazine, which commemorates 100 years of local government at the lake, contains dozens of historic photographs and reports on the council history, the natural lake, the lives of the Awabakal Aborigines and their legends, the first pioneers, coal and industry, shipping and ferries, historic buildings, war heroes and the war years, place names, Pulbah Island, artists, sports people . . . and much more. There's even a photograph of the lake from space and a look at future developments. The magazine is a must for Lake residents, former residents, visitors and anyone who knows the area. It will be a boon to school pupils and students of history.Lake Macquarie: Life and Times is free in tomorrow's Newcastle Herald. Don't miss it.
